The Western Fringe lassoes new attendance record!

Paid attendance of 69,320 tops 12-day record set in 2004

As the sun sets on the Western Fringe, the 19th annual Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival celebrates innovative performances from companies around the world, enthusiastic audiences from near and far, and a new attendance record.  Paid attendance totalled 69,320, surpassing the 12-day record of 68,470 set in 2004.  A total of $430,903 in box office revenue was returned to the performers.  Thanks to vibrant programming and beautiful weather, the festival enjoyed a renewal of participation at Old Market Square.

Attendance easily topped last year’s mark with a total of 97,974, which includes 29,298 at Kids Fringe. “Once again, Old Market Square was the perfect place for people to meet, talk about shows and experience top-notch live entertainment,” said Executive Producer Nick ‘The Sheriff’ Kowalchuk.  “Our focus on children’s programming this year seems to have paid off with strong attendance at indoor shows and wonderful participation at Kids Fringe.”

THE FOLKS THAT MADE IT HAPPEN

On behalf of the festival, Kowalchuk thanked the Wild Bunch, the 830 volunteers, for devoting countless hours and endless enthusiasm to the Western Fringe. “This year, we introduced a new ticketing system and the volunteers met the challenge with the confidence of Cool Hand Luke.  Their valuable contributions, along with the loyal support of sponsors, funders and the media, have been instrumental to our success.”
