Forced to flee their Mennonite village in Ukraine by the Russian army in 1930, Hildie, 6, and her family faced immeasurable fear and devastating loss on their journey to Canada. For nearly 80 years, Hildie has repressed the pain of her past using humour, sarcasm and wit. Now, on a Sunday in spring, in the personal care home where she lives, her children help Hildie confront those memories.
